Facts and Events
Julian’s 1910 census entry indicates that his father, Martin, had been born in England. I am skeptical of this, however, and will continue to carry Ohio as Martin’s birthplace. My reasoning is that the 1860 census record involves the subject directly, not removed a generation. I am going to assume that he died before 1870, since he does not appear in that census, and Juana Maria is living alone with the three boys. The 1860 Los Angeles Co census shows his name as “Martin,” but I believe this to be a middle name used as a common name. My father’s notes showed his name as “James.” The search for Ohio Spencer families in 1850 turned up one that had a James M. Spencer, of the right age and not present in the 1860 census., References
