James Singleton was born in 1857 at Allington in Lincolnshire, son of Eliza Worth Singleton, formerly Bonser, and her husband Robert Singleton, a coachman and groom. James was the sixth of their eleven children. James grew up in Allington, appearing in the 1861 census living with his parents and siblings in West Allington. In the 1871 census he was a servant to a farmer in East Allington.

In 1871 or 1872 James's parents left Allington and moved to Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, where James's mother Eliza died in 1872, when James was 15.

James's next sighting is in 1881 when he was living alone at Aldburgh, a hamlet just outside the town of Masham in Yorkshire. He was described as a general labourer at this time.

By the following year, James had moved to Sydenham in the southern suburbs of London. He was married to Emily Relf in 1882 at West Farleigh in Kent, close to where she was from, and they returned to Sydenham after their marriage, having a daughter called Emily Ethel there in 1883 and a daughter called Mabel Ada there in 1889.

By 1891 they had moved to Kensington in London's western suburbs. They lived at 25 Astwood Mews, where they stayed for over ten years, still being there in the 1901 census. They had a son called Robert in Kensington in 1892 and a son called Edward there in 1901. Whilst living there James worked as a coachman and groom.

James's father Robert died in 1901 at Bainton in Northamptonshire.

Some time between 1901 and 1911 James, Emily and their family moved to Fulham, where they ran a confectionery and tobacconist's shop at 157 Munster Road.

James died in Chelsea in 1928, aged 70. Emily survived him by nearly 27 years.
