James Singleton was born in 1857 at Allington in Lincolnshire, the sixth of ten children of a coachman and groom named Robert Singleton and his wife Eliza Worth Bonser. James grew up in Allington, which although one village straddled two parishes - East and West Allington. In the 1861 census he was living with his parents in West Allington, but by the 1871 census was a servant to a farmer in East Allington. James's mother Eliza died in 1872, when he was 15. She died at Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, although it is not clear whether James had also moved away from Allington.

James's next sighting is in 1881 when he was living alone at Burton upon Ure (adjoining the small town of Masham) in Yorkshire. By the following year, he had moved to the opposite end of the country, when he married Emily Relf in Kent.

James and Emily had four children, with quite significant intervals between them - Emily about 1883, Mabel about 1889, Robert about 1892 and Edward about 1901. Emily and Mabel were born at Sydenham, to the south-east of London, but around 1890/1 the family moved to Kensington, west London. Here James worked as coachman and groom and lived in a mews house. They stayed in Kensington until after 1901, before moving to Fulham, where James became a confectioner and tobacconist.

James appears to have died in 1928, aged 70. Emily outlived him by nearly 27 years, reaching the age of 96.
