A story told to Gordon Shaw by Jim Shaw was Jim was flying planes during WWII. He was in Italy flying scouting missions looking for German planes in a P40. While out on a run Jim got a German plane on his tail and couldn't shake him. Another American plane came along and got the German plane off his tail. After the incident, the other American plane came up beside him & smiled gave him a thumbs up and it was an African-American pilot from the Tuskegee* squadron.
- The first classes of Tuskegee airmen were trained to be fighter pilots for the famous 99th Fighter Squadron, slated for combat duty in North Africa. Additional pilots were assigned to the 322d Fighter Group which flew combat along with the 99th Squadron from bases in Italy. (USAFMuseum History ----from the internet)
