James (Jim) Thomas Scott, born Oct 7, 1833; in Chester County, Penn. James T. Scott was oldest child of William Hazelton Scott and Mary Ellen Short Scott. The spring of 1854, at 21 yrs of age, he moved to Scott County, Iowa. "He began life for himself when hardly of age, and when he crossed the Mississippi River had but $2.50." In the fall of 1855 he came to Putnam County, Mo. He located about 4 miles N. W. of his present residence, near St. John. (The latter being 7-8 miles due East of Powersville.) [Note: The family did not move to Chester County, Pennsylvania until about 1838.] James T. Scott has "a nicely improved farm of 3191/2 acres of good land, upon which he is engaged in farming and stock raising, and here he has a nice nursery, supplying the surrounding country with hedge plants, ornamental trees, etc.". . . . Mr. James T. Scott is a member of the Baptist Church and Mrs. Elizabeth Scott is a member of the Christian Church.
