James appears to have died sometime between the 1851 census and December 1862, when Susanna remarried, describing herself as a widow. The following are all deaths for people called James Savage within England and Wales between those dates for whom the age implies born between 1809 and 1819:
d. James SAVAGE, March Quarter 1853, Liverpool Registration District, Volume 8b, page 178, aged 34 [1818/19] d. None are particularly close to where James had been living in 1851. The closest, in Huddersfield in 1859, had an obituary notice in the Huddersfield Chronicle, describing him as a boatman; a very different trade to last maker. In light of the 1861 newspaper report and prison record below for a last maker called James Savage of the correct age convicted of indecently assaulting a girl and being sent to Cold Bath Fields prison, which was in Clerkenwell district, it is considered that the 1862 death in Clerkenwell is the most likely to be him.

MIDDLESEX SESSIONS, Oct. 16. (Before the Assistant-Judge.) James Savage, 47, last-maker, was indicted at the instance of the Associate Institute for Promoting and Enforcing the Laws for the Protection of Women, for unlawfully and indecently assaulting Ruth Elizabeth Goodier. Mr. Kemp was counsel for the prosecution; Mr. F.H. Lewis for the defence. The parties lived in Dove-court, Leather-lane, and it appeared that the prisoner, while in a state of intoxication, enticed the girl, who was only nine years of age, from her parents' door, and committed an assault upon her. He was found Guilty, and the Court sentenced him to nine months' hard labour.
