Complicated story here: first , this is James, Ruth's First borne son, and not Joseph. The overwritten initials on the census form make it look like Joseph. Also, Sarah E Knight was his second wife, as at least two Newman children predate their marriage 29 Nov1877. Since James has a stepson, James Martin, it's likely that his first wife was married previously, and died leaving The stepson. Sarah E. Knight was married under her maiden name, based on Marriage documents, but it's possible she bore James Martin previously. Awaiting clarification as of August 2015. Need to research the Martin Marriages.
