Purchased a farm on April 27, 1824: 100 acres, S1/2 Lot 4, Concession 11, North Dumfries. 1834 assesment roll lists hisholdings as 28 acres of cleared land with 25 of them wheat, one hewed loghouse, four oxen, three cows, tow young cattle, three younger cattle notrateable, ten swine and sixteen sheep. The family at that time consistedof his wife, one son and three daughters all under the age of sixteen. Afourth daughter came later. Mrs. Milroy died and Mr. Milroy remarried. He moved to Iowa in 1856 and four daughters remained in Canada. Alex Adair listed as owner of this land in 1861. Notes of Joyce Hughes: James Milroy emigrated frist to USA, then to Galt. Arrived Galt April 1824. He was first schoolteacher in the roughcast schoolhouse built in Galt in 1832. He taught at Little's Corners, Preston, & St. George, also. He was the clerk of session, and an elder in the Associate Church, Galt. Moved to Sandsprings, Iowa in 1856, with his second wife (Margaret Milroy, his first--full-cousin, who was born March 14, 1811 in Scotland and died Nov. 4, 1898), his first son William by 1st marriage, and then living children of the second marriage--i.e., James, Peter, Hanna & Elizabeth. Bought land in Galt April 1824. Lived at Cairnbrook (now called Cairnbrock) as a child (in Kirkcolm Parish). Note - Info from Karen on Genealogy.com: Hello Ron, I have traced back to the Stranraer area, my husband's Milroy line goes back to his 4 x great grandfather William Milroy. William Milroy was a farmer and I think would have been born around 1795/1800. His son John Milroy was born Inch/Stranraer so I presume that is where his William farmed. As yet I have not found any other siblings for John to help with the search for his father William. John's mother is named on his death cert as Janet Shaw but I have not yet found a marriage for a William Milroy and Janet Shaw. I wonder if your John had a brother called William or have you come across anything in your research that would connect with my Milroys? Karen. 'James Milroy settled in this community in 1856, buying land at the high price of $12 an acre. A son, James Milroy, still owns thirty acres of the original place, and a grandson, John W. Milroy, eighty acres.' 1914 Delaware County History Vol. 1 pg. 272(Medical):Source: U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880 Delaware, Iowa. (Research):Not sure where he belongs yet.
