James (Jim) McGillivray spent several years in Canada. Family stories put him in Winnipeg as owner of a general store, but in steamship records he is documented as working as a warehouseman in McIntosh Brothers department store in Nepanee, Ontario. When he returned to Inverness he opened a drapery shop in the Victorian arcade where he worked with his sister Nan.
