James McCaul Jr. joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as a 19-year old Fort Worth teenager. He became a B-17 Flying Fortress bombardier and supported air campaign of the D-Day invasion, "Operation Overlord" (6 Jun 1944), assigned to the 34th Bombardment Group, Eighth Air Force, U.S. Army Air Forces. Based in Britain he flew 32 combat missions from 1944 to 1945 in support of World War II. James McCaul returned to Texas after the war and, while at the University of Texas at Austin, met his future wife, Frances Jane Lott. Major McCaul continued his military service during the Korean War before working in business in Dallas.[no source citation]
