Thought I wasn't going to find this chap's birth or baptism as I couldn't find him in any of Bickleigh, Walkhampton or Buckland Monachorum records, although the latter were not as thoroughly searched. Then I noticed several King entries in the Walkhampton records referred to Kings in Sampford Spiney - bingo. His baptism entry reads: "1754 James Barter son of Walter King and Ann his wife was baptized ye 22 Day of May"
  9. the Manor Court rolls record the death of James Barter King and present Walter King to be taken tenant at Ditsham, and the Manor Stewards' Accounts for the same year record the payment of heriot due upon the death of James Barter King, his actual death date being annotated against the 1795 manor survey
