Facts and Events
American Descendants of Lawrence Pearson, page 406: After his father's death, his mother Martha Bassell Jackson returned returned to Clarksburg. James attended preparatory school in Morgantown and in 1890 and 1891 the Episcopal high school at Alexandria Virginia. At Lehigh University, Bethlehem, pennsylvania, James studied engineering, and he graduated from there in 1896. In 1897, James was appointed assistant engineer of the Little Kanawha railroad and in 1898 he held a similiar position with the Ohio River Railroad Company. From 1898 to 1900 he was city engineer of Parkersburg, West Virginia. He was instrumental in constructing the Parkersburg, Marietta and Inter-Urban railway, from Parkersburg to Marietta Ohio, in 1900 and 1901. Mr. Jackson was active in business as well as engineering. He was made a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, 2 Jun 1901 and was a consulting engineer of construction work in Wood County in 1913. In 1901, he organized the J.M. Jackson lumber company with office in Philadelphia. They were wholesale lumber merchants. He also organized the Everglades Cypress Lumber Company with a plant in Loughman Florida. James was also involved with the Jackson Land and Mining Company whose officers were in Parkersburg with its main plants in Clarksburg. James and Catherine had no children. From the Jackson Brigade webite: http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~hyde/jackson/JamesMadisonJackson.html In the 1900 census for Parkersburg, Ward 5, Wood County, West Virginia, James M. Jackson , born June 1873 was age 26 head of the household born in WV? his mother Martha was age 45, born July 1854, stated she had 3 children and 3 living. (She had remarried to David Burns in 1886, but is using the Jackson name in this census. Listed as daughter was Meigs Jackson born 1876 who would be James' sister, and Catherine Jackson age 7 born April 1893 in West Virginia. By 1910 he had been married for 8 years. He was age 36, born in Missouri, and Kathryn T. Jackson, his wife was age 31, born in Kentucky. In 1920 he was still in Parkersburg, listed as Madison J. Jackson age 46, born in Missouri, his wife Katharine was age 41, born in Kentucky. In 1930 he was age 56 and Katharine T. was age 53 living in Parkersburg. In 1922 he established the J. Madison Jackson Scholarship-Athletic Fund, to reward the accomplishments of selected Parkersburg High School students. His bequest to the board of education suggested that each of the recipients be given a twenty dollar gold piece. There is a discrepancy noted in his death certificate where his parents are named Bassell Jackson and Martha Bassel. Most historical records give James' parents as Meigs Jackson and Martha Bassel. This writer does not know if Meigs had a middle name of Bassell or if possibly the informant gave incorrect info. The 1910 and 1920 census records show James as born in Missouri and his parents born in West Virginia. James was the manager of a lumber company.
