James Monroe Hunter served in the Civil War as a Private with 33rd NC Regiment. He enlisted 31 Jul 1862 and was discharged 20 Oct 1862 due to poor eyesight.

After their marriage in 1858, James Monroe and Luvitha A. Hunter lived for 23 years near Dozier on the banks of the Yadkin River in Forsyth Co. They were loyal members of the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, which stood near their home. In 1881 they sold their farm to William Henry Long for $4,000 and bought the Col. Shouse home place (built in 1768) and 300 acres of land near Old Town, NC for the same amount. They moved their family to Old Town and in August 1881, moved their membership to Maple Springs Methodist Church of which they remained members for the rest of their lives. W.V. Baucom is the present owner of the old Hunter home on the Yadkin River.

James Monroe Hunter's will was probated on 28 Feb 1916. He died 22 Feb 1916. A part of this will indicated his approximate worth at $25,000, and mentioned heirs of his wife, Alice Josephine Hunter Speas, Jane Keiger, Luvitha Poindexter, John Oscar Hunter and Mary Mollie Cox. He was buried at Bethabara Graveyard, Forsyth Co., NC.
