James spent early years in Washington, Mich. and later moved to Detroit with his parents. Graduated from Western High School in Detroit. Later attended Wayne State University in Detroit. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1932 from an ROTC program. In WWII, he was in the 2nd armored Division under General Patton and was in a special task force invading North Africa at Morocco in 1942. He also participated in the 1943 invasion of Sicily and was in the Army of Occupation in Germany from 1946-1949 After returning home in May 1949, he was sent 1 year later to the Pacific area under General McArthur. James retired in Mar. 1957 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. James and Clara Elizabeth built a home in Elizabeth town, Kentucky in Aug 1957. Were members of Memorial united Methodist Church there. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Camp Knox Lodge, F and AM. He was a engineer for the U.S. Armor and Engineer Board, Fort Knox, til his death.
