He was born in Tompkinsville, he is the only child of William P. and Lillian (Chism) Gillenwater. He was an attorney. He began service in the U. S. Army as an infantry officer in the European and Pacific theatres of operation. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and numerous other military decorations. After leaving the Army with the rank of captain, he attended Vanderbilt University School of Law. Surviving is wife, Marquita; a son, Tim Gillenwater, a daughter Emily Laird. He was preceeded in death by a daughter, Mollie Merwyn Gillenwater. He was cremated. His ashes are interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Tompkinsville.
