From Franklin Family History, p. 24: James and Rhoda brought their family of 3 children to the Oklahoma Territory from Tennessee before 1890. While living in the eastern part of the state, they lived close enough to the family of the famed "Will Rogers" that "Will" often rode his horse over to the Franklin place to play with their children. James had moved his family to Lincoln county by 1900.

He was a hard working farmer, who raised cotton, maize, kafir corn, and garden vegetables to provide food for his large family. One son, Louis Ellis, was old enough to help with the work. The girls helped with the field work also. The children attended school in the Union District and also Happy Hill. Rhoda saw that her family attended Church and always taught a Sunday School class. The girls played organ for the Church. gasoline lamps were used in Church for light. Rhoda was often called on to pray for the desperately ill of the community. The family moved north of Warwick to the Drummond Place.

The children grew up and all but one, Ben, married locally. All their marriage licences were applied for at the Lincoln County Courthouse. The two girls, that married Mason brothers, went to Texas to live. Laura, the eldest daughter, died after one year of marriage and left an infant daughter, which James and Rhoda raised as their own.

In 1926, James, Rhoda, and two of their sons, Carl and Louis, left Oklahoma for South Texas, where they expected to find a paradise. Vegetables grew in abundance in the rich soil, but truck farming did not pay much in cash money. Carl and Louis returned to Oklahoma to again take up farming. The elder Franklin's daughter, eventually took Lora, their granddaughter, and moved to California, where Ben and two of their daughters lived.

James was a jolly, good natured person and was said to be the strongest man in those parts. Many of their descendants still live in Lincoln County, Oklahoma.
