   EWING

The Ewing name comes from the Scottish clan MacEwan. Old as it certainly is, the clan MacEwen, has left few records. Yet there is little doubt that the clan lands lay in Cowal, were as late as 1750, there still remains the ruins of a castle known as Castle MacEwen. Eoghainn na h-Oitrich, Ewen of the Otter, from whom the clan takes its name, florished in the early 13th century. In 1432 Swene, 9th and last in the Otter line, gave the lands to Duncan Campbell and though they were temporarily returned, James V established the Earl of Argyll in their possesion after this, the MacEwans became a "broken" clan and were to be found scattered throughout Scotland, particularly in Lennox and Galloway. Other forms of the name are Ewen, Ewing, MacEwan, MacKeown. Doubtless the MacEwens descended from the original Scots of Dalriada.
