JAMES DREW DIED SATURDAY MORNING ---- WAS FIRST WHITECHILD BORN IN COUNTY -- SERVED IN CONFEDERATE ARMY -- DEATH DUETO INFIRMITIES OF AGE ----- Early last Saturday morningdeath claimed one of the oldest citizens of the county, Mr.James Drew, of Hamburg. Death followed an illness of manyweeks, dating from July 4th, and was due to the infirmities ofold age. James Drew was born in Madison county, June 7, 1838, and was thefirst white child born in the county, and has lived his entirelife of 88 years at the old Drew home where he was born. He was the son of Farnell and Sara Drew, pioneers of the state.In young manhood he was married to Charlotte Watts, and was thefather of nine children, eight of whom survive. They areMessrs. Jim, Mitchell and Joseph, and Mrs. Jennie May ofHamburg, Mrs. Minnie Bush and Mrs. Leitha Bush of Lovett, Mrs.G. F. Waltrep of Winter Haven and W. T. Drew of Palm Beach. Heis also survived by a brother, Major M. C. Drew, of Madison andFort Myers. He was a member of the Ebenezer Methodist church, and held inhigh esteem by a large circle throughout the county. He wasalso a member of Camp Colquitt, United Confederate Veterans, andamong the last of the rapidly thinning ranks of the grey cladsoldiers of the Confederacy. He first saw service with Capt.Bradford's 1st Florida regiment at Pensacola, and was with CatpBradford when he was killed at Santa Rosa Island. A remnant ofthe Union flag captured that day from a company of the UnionArmy, under Capt. Wilson, was among his most cherished relics ofthe war. He also saw service in the Carolinas and Virginiaunder Capt. Jack Livingston in Company G. Battalion 4. WhenGen. Lee surrendered he received his discharge. Funeral took place last Saturday afternoon, at 5 o'clock, atConcord cemetery, Rev. H. F.
