NOTE: Attended school in Newfield NY and worked on his father's farm. in 1850 he bought the neighboring farm in Hector Township, Potter County, PA. He bought a Scowboat called "The Tame Indian" in 1847. He worked on the Erie Canal with his team and scowboat. At the end of one season and returning to his farm behind a towboat on Seneca Lake, a storm threatened to sink the heavily loaded boat. James escaped to the tug and cut the towline and witnessed the product of more than a years work swallowed by cruel Lake Seneca. The cargo, his mule team, bolts of cloth, barrels of salt, and many provisions and personal articles were lost. He was a soldier in the civil War, serving from Dec 1 1864 to war's end.
