Originally a tall, impressive obelisk on a large base which has since fallen (or been toppled). The inscriptions for James and Mary appear on opposite sides of the base. There are footstones labelled Mother and Father which straddle the fallen obelisk.

"Although the State did not create a Board of Health for Shreveport until 1874, as early as 1858, the local governing body passed an ordinance establishing a committee on health and safety. . . . Three years later in 1861, the city created a Board of Health consisting of five licensed physicians to be elected annually by the Mayor and the Trustees. The Board was given cognizance over all sanitary matters of interest to the city and was to make suggestions and reports to the Mayor and Trustees of the city. Appointed to the board were Drs. W.H.
