"James2 Cole (James1) apparently spent all his adult life in Plymouth and is not the James Cole of Swansea (see TAG 64[1989]:140) or the James Cole of Casco, Maine."
"James2 Cole married first at Plymouth on 23 December 1652 Mary Tilson, doubtless a daughter of Edmond1 and Joan (—) Tilson. ... he married second by September 1689 Esther —. She was living on 22 November 1699 when she acknowledged the 13 November 1684 deed of James Cole to son Ephraim Cole. He married third in 1700 or later Abigail —. (There is considerable confusion about her identity. In Anc. Landmarks, 2:67, William T. Davis states that James2 Cole married Abigail Davenport in time for her to be the mother of Elizabeth3 Cole, who married Elkanah Cushman in 1677, while in New England Marriages Prior to 1700, Clarence Almon Torrey states that James's first wife was dead by 1660 and that he married Abigail Davenport in 1654 or by 1660 or by 1679. None of these sources contemplates a wife Esther, and no evidence has been found for the identiy of James2 Cole's wife Abigail.)"
