Residing in Portland, Michigan at the time of enlistment. Enlisted on February 15, 1864 at Ovid, Michigan as a Private in the 27th Michigan Infantry, 1st Field and Staff, at the age of 37. Wounded in right leg, amputated, on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. Died at Washington DC of wounds received.

He enlised as a privated on February 15,1864 at at the age of 37, in the 27th Infantry of Michigan, unit number 1104.
James was wounded on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. James died of his wounds on June 21, 1864 in Washington, D.C.

Private Colby served with Perrin's Sharpshooters, the 1st Company of the 27th Michigan Infantry. They were armed with the most destructive weapon, the "Spencer repeating rifle". They were so effective in actions with the 27th that the entire Regiment voted to all be armed with them and the whole Regiment be redesignated as "Sharpshooters". He was a Corporal at the time of this death.

Two of his nephews, sons of brother Stephen, were also killed in the Civil War. James was killed at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, and Ira was killed at the Battle of Munfordville in Kentucky.
