FOSTORIA -- Dr. James W. Carter, age 93, died at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2006. at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria, OH. Dr. Carter is survived by two daughters: Jill Knuth (Donald) of Stanford, CA. and Diana Baxter of Fostoria, OH, four grandchildren, John Knuth and Jennifer Knuth, both of Colorado, Trudy Numan of Virginia and Richard Baxter of TX and four great-grandsons, Rees, Kadin, Carter an Kevin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Wilda, his parents and his sisters, Elizabeth Porter, Dorothae Doster, Juanita McLaughlin, Anna Belle Glunt and his brother Robert, who was lost in a submarine in WWII. James W. Carter was born August 1, 1913, in Bradner, to Dr. James L. Carter and Lena Rees Carter. The Carter family moved to Fostoria in 1915. James graduated from Fostoria High School in 1931 and from Northern Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago in 1933. In 1935, he opened an office in Fostoria, taking over the practice of his father who had died earlier that year. Dr. Carter practiced optometry in Fostoria for a total of 40 years until his retirement in 1975. In 1938, James Carter married Wilda Bates. In 1950, the two of them built a passive solar house which remains as the family home. They enjoyed traveling and took annual car trips to various destinations in the United States. They also traveled several times to Canada, Mexico and Europe, and once to Japan. "Doc" as he was called, had a life time interest in music and was the last known surviving member of the 1923 world champion Fostoria High School marching band. He was also a member of the champion VFW band in the late 1940s and early 1950s. As a hobby, he repaired and restored many old musical instruments. In his younger days, he was a cycling enthusiast and over the years had owned many different kinds of bicycles, including penny farthings and tandems. He rode regularly for exercise until well into his 80s. James was a 91-year member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Fostoria where a memorial service will be held at a later date.
