"Early in 1861, James G. Cain organized a company known as the Jefferson Grays, becoming captain of the same, which was mustered into the Confederate service as Company I, Twenth-eighth Georgia infantry. He took his company to Camp Stphens, Griffin, Ga., where he was elected major of his regiment. In 1862, he was promoted to lietenant-colonel, and while serving in his office he was seriously wounded in the battle of Malvern Hill, the result of this injury being such that he was incapacitated for farther service, on which score he resigned his commission and returned to his home."
