On 10 March 1729, James Barnes, of Anne Arundel County, signed his name to a mortgage for some livestock, made to Lance Todd for L11.22.5.

On 6 Oct 1730 he patented 80 acres called Barnes Luck in Anne Arundel (now Howard) County. In 1737, he patented 235 acres called Day's Discovery.

In his will... he named his brothers Peter and Adam Barnes as executors, and named children Richard, James, and John.
