James was an infant when his mother died. As a child, he may have lived with his mother’s family for a while after her death. He was the only child of James to live as an adult in Hampshire County. There is no record of a previous marriage, though Elizabeth was about twenty-two years younger than James. In the 1850 census James, a laborer, and Elizabeth were living in Wardenville, Hardy County with their three children. He was found in the 1860 census for Hardy County. James was 71, a farmer, with real estate valued at $400, personal at $100. Living with him were his daughter Almira, age 22, and James L., age 19. Elizabeth was not listed and had probably died.
