    According to Nearpass he was arrested by the British as a spy, or for some other offense, and sentenced to be shot. His brother, Samuel Gonsales and one of the Westbrook's interceded and his life was spared. In Quinlan's History of Sullivan County, he and his brothers are described that they "hated kings as if they were panthers."
