Information from Llisa Rich West; 1993; Historical Marker along Rd. S 31 in Charlton, Mass: THE SALEM TOWNE HOUSES N. of this spot stands the house of Gen. S. Towne, Sr., built in 1775 to the south is the site of the mansion house he built in 1776. Occupied by Gen. Salem Towne, Jr. and by other descendants until 1923, it is now at O S V ( Old Sturbridge Village). Salem Towne, Sr. served as quartermaster in the revolution. After the war he became major general of the militia, a member of the constitutional convention of 1779, a legislator and a leader in local affairs. Salem Towne Jr., was a brigadier general in command of troops in Boston in the war of 1812, and held many responbiile positions in the government of the Commonwealth. ........Erected by Charlton Hist. Society Note....O S V , in Sturbridge, Mass., is a "living" museum built to replicate a Mass. village in the 1840's. Period buildings, including the Salem Towne house, have been moved to the site and arranged in a village setting. The Salem Towne home is the largest in the village and is representative of the homes wealthier citizens. References
