STEM FAMILY by -- Cindy King

It is believed that the Stem family, "Came as pioneers to what is now Bedford County from the East, by way of Cumberland Gap, in the late 1820's in covered wagons pulled by oxen. The entire group settled about two and one-half miles north of what is now Unionville, near Rover. Thre they constructed a stockade for protection against the Indians. A few yards outside the stockade, a plot of ground was set aside as a burying ground. This burying ground is located on the Manre Road near Rover.

Among many other markers these can be found,

Nancy Stem, (maiden name -- Caldwell) wife of Asa b. 14 September 1788, d. 5 January 1870.

Asa Stem -- Second son of Jacob and Polly Stem b. about 1790, d. 3 September 1864, aged 74 years.

Jacob and Polly Stem were married sometime during 1785. William Green acted as bondsman when Jacob posted his marriage banns to her (#2587) in Granville County, N. C. They had five children ...

Hi everyone,

I found a file on Milton Horn, who was a grandchild of Jacob Stem. This was a wonderful find for me. This paper list not only the "Children" of Jacob Stem, but also in some cases his "Grand-children". Also, if the grandchildren were deceased, it listed their children, which make them the gr grandchildren of Jacob Stem. (It pays to keep digging) A transcribed paper is in the bottom of this E mail.

Asa Stem & others vs In the County Court of Bedford County, Tenn. H.A. Stem & others

The joint and separate answers of the "Unknown Heirs" of Milton H. Horn decd. by their guardian ad litum C.J. Moody, to the bill filed against them and others in this cause. These defendants answering by their guardian ad liteum say: They admit the death of Milton H. Horn childless; that he never married; that he died the owner and possessor of the tract of land mentioned in the bill; that he died interstate and without brothers or sisters, or uncles or aunts living at the time of his death II They admit that Milton H. Horn left surviving him first and second cousins as his heirs at law, some of whom are correctly named in the bill and others who are designated "Unknown Heirs" being the defendants answering and these defendants answering say that they are so titled (?) to their distrubutive share of the proceeds of the land described in bill when the same is sold and the heirs at law of Milton H. Horn dec'd are ascertained and recognized by decree of this Court, and they ask for strict proof as to who and the heir at law of the deceased and for all references to the Clerk for the ascertainment of the same

III They admit that from the very nature of the case, from the fact that the tract of land contains only about 60 acres, and because the Known heirs, cousin fo Milton H. Horn dec'd are so numerous, and because there are also many unknown heirs, It will be and is an utter impossibility to partition said land in the knid, and admit that a sale of said land upon the terms prayed for in the bill is emphatically necessary, and that the fund be distributed under decree of this court.

IV All allegations in the bill not herein admitted are denied and proof required and these defendants submit their rights and interest in this cause to the protection fo the County C.J. Moody - Guardian ad Litum

C.J. Moody makes oath that the statements in the foregoing answer made as his own knowledge are true; and those made as on information and belief, he believes to be true. C.J. Moody sworn and subscribed before me, this Oct 12th, 1903 P.C. Steel Clerk
