Story from Ellis Owens 2007: He has "heard a family story that Jacob commented that he had a close cousin (named Mac, I am assuming a nickname) that served in the Confederate Army during the war, and after the war they talked about what they would have done if they ever had met on the battlefield. Jacob said I guess I woulda shot ya!!, but in a friendly sorta way (probably in the butt or foot ya know and laugh about it!)."

Jacob for the north during the Civil War. Jacob was shot in the leg near Atlanta at Utoy Creek.

He possibly worked at the post office per Marshall Owens' grandson in Speedwell, TN.

Source: Claiborne County Tennessee Pensioners, Page 60, Section 51. Mary Owens, widow of Jacob Owens No. 897031. He served as Corporal in Co. I, 8th Tenn Volunteers, states he first enlisted at Camp Nelson, Kentucky 1863, June in 9th Tennessee. -- it was Parson's Regiment, all the time of his enlistment he lived 2 miles from Speedwell, Claiborne Co., Tenn. I was then living with my father-in-law, John C. Ausmus. I was married 12-1862, and went to his place and left there March 1863 to enlist. Before I lived with Ausmus, I lived with Wm. McBee, a brother-in-law of mine. He now lives 8 or 9 miles from -- just made that my home when I was not teaching school. My neighbors during this time were Henry Ausmus of Speedwell, Wm. Ausmus Compensation, Tenn, Samson Edwards Speedwell, L.M. Carr, Compensation, Tenn -- metions Morgan Wright, Phebe Union County, Tenn., and James Russell, New Prospect, Unioin County, Tenn., enlisted at same time and same company and regiment. Affidavit of John C. Ausmus -- Speedwell, Tenn, 1890 who states Jacob Owens married "my daughter 1862 -- affidavit of Henry Ausmus 1890 same place, age 58, states he is no blood relation of pensioner, "I claim a little kin with his wife. Affidavit of Joseph Ausmus same place.SECTION 52 The widow Mary Owens, Speedwell, Tenn. the soldier made sworn affidavit that he was born 1836, February 10 -- which affidavit was made in Claiborne County, Tenn., one Dr. J. F. Ausmus 1906, Speedwell, Tenn was his family physician and makes affidavit. Acquainted with him since he was a small boy, was his physician for 14 years -- declaration for widow's pension 1920 by Mary Owens, age 78, that they married 1862, December 18. Her maiden name was Ausmus -- by Eld. John Phreemon, he died 4-30-1920 Speedwell. Affidavit made by Matilda Bolinger of Savannah, Missouri, who affirms in due form of law and says she is age 77 and was at the wedding of Jacob Owens, Decd., and Mary Owens legally married. she signed affidavit 1920. Affidavit made by Bengaman Ausmus of Middlesboro, Kentucky age 76 in 1920 and that he was present at the marriage of Jacob Owens and Mary Owens, in 1898 the soldier Jacob Owens states he married Mary Ausmus 12-18-1862, Claiborne County, Tenn., by Eld. John Freeman, record burned at Tazewell Court House fire. His children were Matilda J. Owens, born 11-20-1865, Claiborne County, David L. Owens born 9-18-1867, C.M. Owens 9-18-1871 (Christian Marshall), Martha E. Owens 11-6-1873, James M. Owens 3-30-1876, McH. Owens 7-5-1878, Wm. M. Owens 4-28-1881, Margaret B. Owens 3-29-1886. In 1915 a list of children were given as follows by Jacob Owens. Showing Susan Malissa Owens was born 11-1-1863, Matilda Jane Owens born 11-2-1865, John A. Owens, born 10-12-1869, Hester M. born 11-26-1883.
