Jacob, s. of Jacob and Persis, [born] Jan. 12, 1686.
[Birth of sister Persis Aug 1685 rules out an interpretation of 1685/86, which would follow book policy of using modern year equivalences, and makes it clear that this means 12 Jan 1686/87.]

  3.   Source:Cutter, William Richard. Historic Homes and Places and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Vol. 4, p. 1831, indicates that twins, both eventually named Jacob, were born 12 Jan 1686-7, but one died 20 Jan 1686-7. This is something Cutter had earlier put into his article on the Kendall Family, NEHGR, vol. 39, p. 20 (Jan 1885). Only one birth record is found, it makes no reference to twins, and no such death record is found, in the published Woburn records. Cutter was the librarian of the Woburn Public Library and might be expected to have access to original and varied documents, but the fact that he did not repeat this in Source:Cutter, William Richard. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts makes one suspect he discovered it was an error? In any event, only one Jacob survived.

Source:Crane, Ellery B. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts manages to top Cutter, first copying Cutter about the twin, and then assigning children of the son Jacob to his father. Since the son Jacob married his step-sister Alice Temple, both parents and children ended up as Jacob and Alice Kendall, making for a confusing situation. However, Crane's misunderstanding requires that he show the surviving "twin" dying before 1714 when another Jacob was born. This is wrong, of course, since the Jacob born 1714 was a grandson, not another son.
