Jack Armstrong sold his dinner club in Minnesota and moved with his wife Carol to Grants Pass, Oregon to open a pizza parlor. They brought an employee, Lucille Carter, with them, trying to give the young woman a fresh start. Lucille's ex-husband, John Carter, found her in Oregon. He held Jack and Lucille hostage for five hours before shooting and killing them both. He then shot himself twice, but survived. He received a mandatory life sentence.
