Biography

From Sally Ann (Esteb) Gullickson/Cureton, 8203 Hensley Court, Alexandria, Virginia 22308 1997 ISAAC REDDEN ESTEB Isaac was born 1 September 1828-1 on a farm just outside the town of Boston, Wayne County, Indiana-2. He was the first born child for John Montgomery Esteb and his wife Nancy Jane Fisher-3. John had emigrated as a toddler from Rowan County, North Carolina with his family around 1807 and Nancy came from Shelby County, Kentucky with hers about the same time. Isaac had four brothers and two sisters, all born near Boston-4. When he was 20 years old he married a cousin, Nancy J. Seany on 25 February 1849-5. They settled near their parents in Wayne County-6 and over the next four years had two sons of their own, Jacob William, born 8 September 1850-7 and John Franklin, born 9 August 1852-8. By October of 1854 they had moved to Wayne County, Iowa near the town of Promise City-9 , with his brother Elijah-10. He proceeded to purchase land there and established himself as a farmer-11. Two years later a third son, Isaac Newton was born on 24 February 1856-12. He died 12 September 1856 and was buried in the cemetery in Corydon, Iowa-13. Two more sons were born to them, Charles Albert on 14 October 1858-14 and Walter L. on 2 2 December 1860-15. On 25 April 1863, Nancy died-16. On June 18, 1863, Isaac married Elizabeth C. Gray Markham-17, a civil war widow. She had one daughter at the time, Jennie, born 24 May 1860-18. Sometime in 1864, he and Elizabeth had their first child, Rueann-19. Shortly after tha t they moved from Iowa to Caldwell County, Missouri near the town of Hamilton-20. He purchased land there, beginning in December of 1864 and on into 1865-21. He helped guard the railways with the union forces during the Civil War during this time. Isaac and Elizabeth had five more children over the next 10 years. They were Nancy Jane , born in 1866-23, Jessie Lauri, born 29 January 1869-24, Olive Eugenie, born in October of 1869-25, Horace Lemuel-26, born in 1873-27 and Fannie Catherine born in December of 1875-28. Two of Isaac's brothers also came to Missouri. Elijah, who was a lawyer, settled in neighboring Ray county-29. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 his parents also moved there with his brothers, Thomas and Lemuel Albert-30. His mother died in 1869-31. John Thomas married a woman in Missouri named Alice Ophelia James-36. Since the James gang lived nearby in Clay County, Missouri, family tradition has it that she was a relative of Jesse and Frank James. Isaac eventually retired to the state of Washington, near where some members of the gang were known to live in the early 1900's-37, creating more speculation and questions regarding the relationship between the two families. Sometime before Fannie Catherine was born in 1875, Isaac left Missouri for Oregon. This time his father and brothers stayed in Missouri, but his four sons from his marriage to Nancy Seany accompanied him. In November of 1875 he and John Franklin purchased land together in Buena Vista, Polk County, Oregon-38. Isaac operated a general store in the town. Sometime before 1878, when it was sold, Albert Rice joined him in the operation of the business. The sale papers list the name of the business as Esteb and Rice-39. He had other connections to the Rice family. On 12 June 1877 he married Albert's sister , Sarah Alice Rice-40. At 27-41 she was 21 years his junior. Sometime before 1880 his son John, who had come to Oregon with his wife, returned to Missouri-42 as did Jacob and his wife-43. Charles-44 and Walter-45 stayed in the west. John and Jacob may have told their step-mother about Isaac's marriage to Sarah because on 3 March 1881, Elizabeth Esteb filed for divorce from Isaac in Caldwell County, Missouri-46. It appears from articles in publications in Oregon that Isaac did not tell anyone in Oregon about Elizabeth and their children. He and Sarah Alice had three children of their own. The first was Samuel Oscar born 1 6 October 1878 in Beuna Vista, Polk County, Oregon-47. Second was Eunice Ethel born 28 August 1880 in Alsea, Polk County, Oregon-48 and third was Fred Rice born 20 September 1885 in Gooseberry, Morrow County, Oregon-49. They moved to Gooseberry sometime in 1883-50. Once again he became a farmer-51 and established a post office and blacksmith shop in this little community near Ione and Heppner in eastern Oregon. About 1916 Isaac and Sarah Alice moved across the Columbia River to Goldendale, Klickitat County, Washington-52. The story is that one day he was sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair. He rocked a little too hard and fell back over the edge of the porch breaking his hip. On this death certificate the secondary cause of death is listed as "fracture of neck of femur by fall on hip"-53. He died 10 April 1922-54. Sarah went back to Morrow County and lived with their daughter Eunice until her death 20 years later on 22 December, 1942-55. Notes: 1.
