[frydds.FTW] Mabel came to New Mexico with her parents from Henrietta, Texas where her father was a bookkeeper for Jim Curtis, owner of the Diamond Tail Ranch. Mr. Curtis' daughter, Sadie , and her husband were at the ranch but unable to keep books. Mabel received her teaching certificate from Santa Rosa after having attended school at Ricardo where Jean Stearns taught. Mrs. Stearns was about 18 years of age and this was her first school. The people there payed her so much per month per pupil to teach. Mabel had taught at Puerta de Luna, Elvira, and a school on the Yeso Creek before moving to the school at Blanco. After her marriage to Fred Fry in1918 in Portales, New Mexico, Mabel served as Postmistress at Doreno, New Mexico for about four years. References
