Even though her name was Ida Belle, all indications are that she went by the name of 'Belle'. In the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, it is related that Belle (Minor) Mackenzie lived in Oklahoma in the 1930's, during the Great Depression. The railroad track ran behind her home, and there were so many hobos (also called tramps) that knocked on her back door looking for a handout that she finally placed a sign on the door that read, "Please do not knock. Railroad man sleeping inside." She almost missed a visit from her ex-sister-in-law, Claudia Cordelia (Vest) DeWitt, when Claudia visited from Texas, because Claudia read the sign and was afraid to knock!
