Anglican minister Joseph Sandys said of Kilrea in 1796, 'The Dissenters [Presbyterians] and Papists in this parish are practically to a man rebels and are fired with bloody revolution that would even be more zealous than that of France.'[1]

In 1886 he was one of the Belleville representatives to the convention of the Irish Societies of New Jersey.S7 He owned a large store on the corner of William and Washington Sts., Belleville, which he rented in 1896 to a Willard Brown.S4 That same year he was granted a saloon license.S5 In 1901, he was re-elected Vice-President of the Belleville Building and Loan Association.

    Hugh Diamond, a well-known resident of Belleville, died July 25, at his home at William and Dow streets, in that place. Mr. Diamond was born in Ireland. Thirty years ago he took up his residence in Belleville. He was a mason by trade, but had not followed it for many years. He was proprietor of a hotel for many years. He was vice-president of the Belleville Building and Loan Association for several terms and was for many years a member of its board of directors. The deceased is survived by a daughter, seven years old. Besides her, the nearest surviving member of his family is a brother, James Diamond, who still resides in Ireland.
