1913 - 2003 Howard W Boggs was born December 10, 1913, the son of Sarah (MacPhie) a nd Nolan Boggs, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Swan Creek Retirem ent Village. He was raised in East Toledo and attended Waite High School w here he graduated in 1932. He attended Denison University and graduat ed in 1936. While in college, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity a nd lettered in football for Denison University. His roommate at the Sig ma Chi fraternity was Woody Hayes. After graduating from Denison University, Mr. Boggs attended the Universi ty of MI Law School where he graduated in 1939. After passing the OH Bar e xam, Mr. Boggs worked for his father, Nolan Boggs, who was a member of t he law firm, Boggs and Whitacre. Mr. Boggs married Mildred Green of Kent OH, on February 15, 1941. Upon t he commencement of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy a nd served as an officer until his honorable discharge in 1945. During h is military service, Mr. Boggs was C.O on a wooden hulled subchaser (SC64 6) initially, but completed his duty in the Pacific as an executive offic er on a patrol craft rescue ship (PCER848). Mr. Boggs' military duty invol ved extended tours of duty in the Pacific Islands and concluded at the sur render ceremonies in Tokyo Bay. On January 1, 1946, Mr. Boggs entered into a law partnership with his fath er, Nolan Boggs, and his brother, Ralph Boggs, under the name of Boggs, Bo ggs & Boggs. This partnership continued through the death of his father, N olan Boggs, in 1967 until 1972 when he and his brother incorporated the ir firm of Boggs, Boggs & Boggs CO L.P.A In 1972, Mr. Boggs' son, Jo hn H Boggs, joined the family firm, which continued until Mr. Boggs retir ed in 1987. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Boggs had practiced law f or 47 years. Mr. Boggs was a member of the American OH State and Toledo Bar Associatio ns. Mr. Boggs also served as a volunteer in many Toledo area service organ izations. He was a long time member of Sylvania Country Club where Mr. a nd Mrs. Boggs enjoyed playing golf. He served as president of Sylvania Cou ntry Club in 1966. Mr. Boggs was a 33rd degree Mason and served as secreta ry of the Board of Directors of the Otis Avery Browning Masonic Memorial H ome for 20 years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of St. Vincent 's Hospital for 7 years. He was a longstanding member and former preside nt of the Downtown Lions Club. Mr. Boggs was a very active member of Coven ant United Presbyterian Church where he served on the Session as an eld er for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Boggs traveled extensively following his r etirement from the active practice of law. They visited Eng and Scotla nd frequently. Scotland was the birthplace of his mother, Sarah MacPhie. T hey also visited many Western European countries and Australia. Mr. Bog gs also greatly enjoyed visits to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Banff in the C anadian Rockies. Mr. Boggs was predeceased by his parents, Nolan and Sarah Boggs, and by h is grandsons, Adam and Eric Boggs of Fremont OH. Mr. Boggs is surviv ed by his wife, Mildred Boggs, and his brother, Ralph S Boggs. His survivo rs also include his sons, James N Boggs (Theresa) of El Cajon, Californi a, John H Boggs (Laurie A) of Toledo OH, and Richard G Boggs (Lucind a) of Fremont OH. Mr. Boggs is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Kimber ly Boggs, Christopher Boggs and Andrea Boggs of El Cajon, CA, Eliz abeth Boggs, Alyson Boggs and Ryan Boggs of Toledo OH, Beth Parker Brow n, Brent Parker of Fremont OH, and Heather Boggs of Chicago, IL, and o ne great-granddaughter, Mara Elizabeth Brown. Visitation will be held at the J Jeffrey Fretti Funeral Home, 5045 Sylvan ia Avenue (at Corey Rd), 419-843-1117, Wednesday July 23, 2003, from 6 p. m. to 8 p.m. Private burial will be held in Toledo Memorial Park. The family suggests contributions to the charity of the donor's choice.
