Hollis came here from Tennessee. He brought a daughter from a previous marriage with him. Her name was Mary Ann. She is buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. She was married to James Boatner and is buried beside him. It is unclear what happened to Hollis' first wife. He is listed in Tuscaloosa County records, Vol 126, with wife Ann. They sold property to A. W. Miller on Dec. 13, 1855. The 1880 Tuscaloosa County census lists Hollis as divorced and a blacksmith. It also states that he was born in South Carolina. His father also born in South Carolina and his mother born in Virginia. He married Mary Ann Beck in 1886. The following was found in Mud Creek Baptist Association minutes - 1885.

The report of the Committee on Education was submitted by H. P. Hudson. Hudson's report recommended:

"First, that this Association begin working at home to establish a permanent school within her bounds for the purpose of educating our children and our ministers who may desire to educate themselves. Second, we further recommend that this permanent school be established by this Association, and that said school be located at Oak Grove Church, as it is nearest to the center of the Association , and also a suitable and healthy location."
