Officer, U.S. Army |
1. Barbara Gay: I only met the Gen once--he was very soft spoken and slight of
build, but had piercing blue eyes (a family trait), and was very much a
gentleman. Family stories indicate that when in command he was very tough
and right up front with the men. He and Patton became good friends while
they were young officers--both were outstanding polo players and played
together on an army team--and Hobart became Patton's Chief-of-Staff. He was
in the car with Patton when it was involved in the crash that eventually
killed Patton. Patton was in a bad mood (he wanted to chase the Russians
all the way home and wasn't allowed to do that) so they were going pheasant
hunting. One other note--Hobart was hired to consult on the movie
"Patton"--but resigned in protest because he didn't like the way they were
portraying some incidents. As a result they wrote him out of the movie. He
pretty much thought Patton could "walk on water."
2. Commander, First Cavalry Division, Korean War, 1950.
3. Milly Ellis Dillon <grandpasd@msn.com>. Desc. from Hobart's sister, Caroline.
4. Plans for a homecoming celebration for Gen. Gay are described in Source 349.
