    ... Our father was born in the North Parish of Bridgewater, Mass., Dec. 6, 1761, the youngest of ten children. ... was a farmer upon a moderate scale ... "In July 1783 ... I entered college with rather gloomy prospects." ... [having little money after his father died, he worked his way through college to become a minister and teacher at Wiscasset, ME and Chelmsford, MA] ... Our father during the remaining years of his life resided among his children successively at Saco, Me., Salem, Mass., and Brunswick, Me. ... His love of gardening never forsook him. ... He also walked as much as his infirmities would permit. ... He was for seventeen years a Trustee of Bowdoin College, and ten of them Vice President of the institution. ... at three o'clock, A.M., on the 25th [Apr 1849] he peacefully expired. ...

    a man in whom was no guile,
