I entered college with rather gloomy prospects." ... [having little money after his father died, he worked his way through college to become a minister and teacher at Wiscasset, ME and Chelmsford, MA] ... Our father during the remaining years of his life resided among his children successively at Saco, Me., Salem, Mass., and Brunswick, Me. ... His love of gardening never forsook him. ... He also walked as much as his infirmities would permit. ... He was for seventeen years a Trustee of Bowdoin College, and ten of them Vice President of the institution. ... at three o'clock, A.M., on the 25th [Apr 1849] he peacefully expired. ...

REV. HEZEKIAH PACKARD Born at N. Bridgewater, Mass. Dec. 6, 1761: a soldier of the Revolution: grad. Harv. Univ. 1787. Tutor in the same 4 yrs.: a Minister of the Gospel 44 yrs., in this town 28 yrs. Died in peace & triumpth at Salem, Mass. Apr. 25, 1819, aged 87 yrs. 4 mo. --- He was a sincere servant of Christ, a lover of mankind, a successful & be- loved teach of youth, a warm friend, a man in whom was no guile, His children who rise up and call him blessed, even this shone to his memory. The memory of the just is blessed.
