"Philip and William Stoops, brothers, came as Pioneers from Pennsylvania and settled in Nicholas County, Kentucky... William Stoops, the Pioneer, was married three times... By third wife [Sarah Warren] two daughters -- Maria and Hester... Maria married Harvey Adkins -- had two children -- both died before her. Hester married James Herrin." {Transcription of letter from A. B. Stoops, dated 11 Mar 1890, in the research of Albert B. Shankland, citing Mrs. Lizzie (Stoops) Pitman as owner of letter; copy in possession of researcher S. B. Fitting}

 Other sources show her married to a James Delap in Indiana, however, that is a different Hester Stoops.
 Some sources show James Herrin's wife as Hester Herrin, a cousin. It is possible James married both Hesters. It is also possible that the 'Nellie' in 1850 is not the same person as Hester in later censuses.
 In the 1850 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, James Herrin is 30 farmer; Nellie is 28, William T. 8; David H. 6; Sally A. 4; and John B. 1 -- all born Kentucky. {p. 461b, <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cenfiles/ky/nicholas/1850/pg0458a.txt>}
 In the 1860 census for Buzzard Roost, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, James Herrin is 40 farmer; Hester is 37, W. T. 18; D. H. 16; S. A. 13; and John 11. {p. 303 and 304}
 In the 1870 census for Marengo, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, Hester 'Herron' is 47; John B. 21 farm laborer; and Sarah 23. {p. 23}
 John B. Herrin married Mary F. Jewell, and had children Nora 1874, Oscar 1878, and Henry Clay 1876. They are found in Union, Nicholas Co., in 1880.
 I believe their daughter Sarah Ann Herrin married John Clay Blount and is listed with him in Union in 1880.
