I was told a story that when Herbert was very young he went to theRuggles Street Baptist Church with his dad, who was the sexton there.The baptistry was full of water as there was to be a baptism there.Somehow Herbert fell in, and couldn't swim. His dad was off in anotherpart of the church and didn't hear. Another man just happened to stop inand heard Herbert and pulled him out of the water.

Herbert was in the service. He had all of his shots, but somehow hismedical records became lost & the military gave him his shots all overagain. The side effect was epilepsy. He was give an honorabledischarge. Dora fought with the government and finally got himclassified disabled and he received a pension. He then took up hisplants having 3 green houses in the back yard and a cart which he wouldwheel down to the corner of Weston and Main Streets and sell flowers.

Herberts first wife Mildred and his father Levi died within a month ofeach other so Herbert took a cruise.
