Henry served in the Civil war as corporal in Company A Iowa Infantry, having enlisted at Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, as private, about 8 May 1861, discharged honorably about 6 September 1862: described as fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes, he served in the Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee, about 14 February, 1862, suffered from exposure with cold and cough settling in his bronchial tubes which troubled him after his discharge, his occupation was as a teacher. source: "Nicholas Hutchins of Lynn & Groton", by Marvin Clayton Hutchins p 50 |
