The growth of Columbus during the century (1808-1908) is clearlyexhibited by the annexed comparisons, the terms of the second and thirdperiod indicating the growth of postal facilities proportioned to theincrease of population. In 1808 no postflice existed east of the river. It was located west of the river in what is now the west side ofColumbus: then designated Franklinton. These comparisons areself-explanatory. 1808, Adam Hosack, postmaster; one clerk. 1858, SamuelMedary, postmaster; one chief clerk; five additional clerks; onemessenger and porter. 1908, H. W.
