He was a "freeman" and lived on the border of Lough Neagh in Co. Tyrone. By tradition he was very popular and highly esteemed. "His funeral was a mile long." He had a brother, John Hunter, who was to be presented with a new dwelling house on the day of his marriage but who died suddenly that day. The premises were occupied later by Henry Shepherd, grandson of Henry Hunter.
