On 4th May 1917 the Hired Transport “Transylvania,” of 14,315 tons, was sunk by a torpedo off Cape Vado, a few miles south of Savona, with 398 military casualties in addition to the crew. It was proceeding to Salonika with reinforcements. The bodies recovered at Savona were buried two days later, from the Hospital of San Paulo, in a special plot in the town cemetery at Zinola. Of the 398 military dead from the “Transylvania” 82 are buried at Savona and 38 elsewhere (in Italy, Monaco and Spain); four whose bodies were not recovered are commemorated on other Memorials, and the names of 274 appear on a marble screen in Savona Town Cemetery. These last belonged to 3 different Corps or Regiments; 72 belonged to the Royal Army Medical Corps, 38 to the Royal Army Service Corps and 23 to the Welch Regiment.
