Information from David Mainwood, 2ggson to John Mainwood (766) From Barbara Stride Lucas Henrietta is shown as living in Fletching on her marriage certificate(16.11.1895) The witnesses to the Marriage are Thomas Seal and Mary Seal.[Siggs.ged] 1881 Census: Thomas and Harriet with children Henrietta, Harriet, Ann, Mary, Thomas and George in Mayfield Son, George, said in an interview for Danehill Historical Society Magazine in 1995, when he was aged 90: My mother worked in the laundry at Danehurst until crippled by ulcerated legs. She was attended by Dr Gravely and Nurse Fisher. Welfare assistance began when Lloyd George's National Insurance came in in 1911. (George paid in 1912 4d per week; 1916 6d per week; 1918 1s 6d per week.) Henrietta visited Lewes twice a year to buy calico, flannel etc for shirts and nightdresses and other garments, all made at home by hand. She would ask for "so many yards plus a nail" - ie an extra 6 inches for patching. |
