Born September 28, 1919, in Des Moines County, she was the daughter of Theodore and Hazel Lister Johnson. Helen was an accounting clerk for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for thirty years, retiring in 1971. She was a 1938 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Business College for one year. She was a member of the New London Presbyterian Church, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corp League Auxiliary, NARFE, and a board member of the Des Moines County Special Needs Foundation. In 1948 Helen began farming and purchased her first farm in 1951. She then moved to the present farm north of Middletown in 1959. She was well known for raising quality feeder pigs, and for her apple pies and hot chili. She organized the handicap day camp for 19 years and helped with the reading program in local schools. She enjoyed card playing, canning, sewing, planning annual Christmas and birthday parties and loved spending time with her family. Survivors include three sisters, Madelyn Johnson of Middletown, Mildred Tenglin of Burlington, and Eileen Pfeiff of Tucson, AZ; one brother, Larry (Diana) Johnson of Burlington; two sister-in-laws, Arthene Johnson and Rosie Johnson, both of Burlington; and many generations of nieces and nephews.
