MOTHER AND YOUNG BABE IN WATERHOLE

Mrs. Helen Isabella McAlpin, of Lansdowne, was found drowned on Tuesday last with her baby girl. Peggy Georgina Adelaide, aged six months, in a water-hole on her husband's farm, about a mile outside of Lansdowne. Mr. McAlpin, with two children, had left his Wife at home about 3 o'clock to burn charcoal, and upon returning about 6 o.'clock found his wife missing. He asked his eldest son, who had returned home, from school, where his mother was, but the boy said that he thought that she was about the farm gathering eggs. He then became alarmed, and after a search of his property found his wife and baby, floating side by side, in an old charcoal-burning pit, which had been partly filled with water during, the last fall of rain, and which contained about two feet of water. He called the assistance of a near by farmer, Charles Barlin, and they attempted to resuscitate the mother and daughter, but after about an hour the bodies showed no signs of life. A doctor was called in, and life was pronounced extinct in both cases. This is the substance of a report prepared by Constable Bedingfeld (of Cundletown), Who added that Mrs. McAlpin had been in bad health for some time.

TRAGEDY AT LANSDOWNE

Mother and baby drowned

Residents of the Lansdowne district were greatly shocked on Tuesday when they learned that Mrs. Helen Isabel McAlpine, wife of Mr. Andrew McAlpine, of Lansdowne, had been found drowned in an old charcoal pit, about 50 yards from her home. Her six month old baby was also found floating on the surface. The pit is about 18ft. long and contained 2ft. of water. It appears that Mr. McAlpine had been away burning charcoal all day on Tuesday and when he returned in the afternoon he discovered that his wife was not about the house. A short search led to the sad discovery of his wife's body half floating in the dam. The late Mrs. McAlpine was 37 years of age and leaves three other children, It appears that she had been worried lately about her baby. On Wednesday the District Coroner held an inquest and returned a verdict in accordance with the sad circumstances of the case. The funeral took place at the Lansdowne cemetery on Thursday morning. Rev. R. J. Cashin officiated at the graveside and Mr. W. T. Howard attended to the funeral arrangements.
