"Mary" Helen Ashley selected her own first name. (Her father's oldest sister was named Mary M.) She graduated from Blanket High in May 1928, attended Daniel Baker College 1928-9, then took nurse training at Brownwood Medical Arts, Fort Worth Methodist Hospital and Shannon Memorial in San Angelo TX, where she received the RN degree.
She married A. Loyce McMurtrey, an insurance agent, in San Angelo in 1939. She died January 1942 in San Angelo, and is buried there, leaving a son, Joel. When Helen died, Mama, Ione & Joe went to the funeral at San Angelo. When the people were viewing the cold form in the casket, Ione said "Oh, there's Daddy, and doesn't he look nice" - and there he was, across the room, walking up to see once more his & our dear little one.
