"... my grandfather, Alfred George, had two sons; my father Harold George (printing machine manager), and Hector David who started his working life as a talented wood carver. Increasing mechanisation forced him to seek other work. After many vicissitudes he finally found success in the world of insurance. Both my father and his brother Hector are feeling the ravages of time. Both have very little sight left, and my father in addition is almost crippled by arthritis. Quite recently my uncle became a widower." 1926: On his December wedding certificate his is listed as a Wood Carver, living at 113 Crescent Road, Alexandra Park. Kenneth George Western later writes: "Uncle Hector did inherit the family artistic strain. He became a woodcarver, and was responsible for a number of fine pieces and mouldings in London churches and theatres. The coming of the machine age destroyed hand-carving, and after a long period of unemployment uncle took up insurance, to his considerable financial benefit. Uncle Hector and Aunt Connie had one son Ralph David, who lives near me." References
